Formula one fans can finally breathe after a long winter break, because it’s race week.

Drivers have already touched down into Melbourne Australia as the city gears up to welcome thousands of fans to the Australian Grand Prix. 2019 was the last year that Australia had been the first to welcome in the new formula one season but as the Bahrain and Saudi grand prix have both moved due to the month of Ramadan, drivers will begin their 2025 season at the infamous Australian street track.
The 5.3km Albert Park Circuit is located in the midst of Melbourne city among existing roads and a car park. It has a mixture of long straights, fast corners and 4 DRS zones. There have been two notable changes made to the track this year at turn 6 and turn 7 after two separate nasty crashes during last year's race with George Russel and Alex Albon. The kerbs at turn 6 have been replaced with a ‘single specification of negative kerb’ and the FIA has also confirmed in a statement that “the gravel trap now extends to the back of the kerb and the barrier on the left hand side of turn 7 has also been moved”.
This fast pace circuit is home to Oscar Piastri as he prepares to drive out a highly anticipated championship winning car with hopes for the top spot of the podium. Jack Doohan is another Aussie hoping to prove his worth to Alpine as he will step into his first home race whilst Alpine reserve driver Franco Colapinto closely watches on from the pitlane. Fans will finally get to see how Lewis Hamilton will perform in the new SF-24 against his highly rated teammate Charles Leclerc. We will also see Carlos Sainz break in the new Williams car alongside Alex Albon and six new rookies take to the track on what is predicted to be a wet Sunday race.
Mclaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull are the top teams from the spectator’s point of view, from the results of the Bahrain testing, but the Australian Grand Prix will be the first of the races to truly see how transparent those testing times were. Which teams were hiding their true potential? Which teams have stepped up since testing? Which driver is going to claim the first win of the season? Who will be the best of the rookies? If we have learnt anything from the 2024 season, it is that anything can happen. Let’s hope this season is just as exhilarating as the last.
